Former Auburn football HC Gus Malzahn just had a better first season in Orlando than his final season on the Plains, so it might not be fair to say he is longing for what once was.
Especially with UCF set to join the Big 12 in 2023.
That said, Malzahn’s social media activity seems to indicate that Auburn is at least on his mind. In the past four days, three of his four tweets have been about the Tigers.
He hasn’t commented on the football program (and won’t) but he did comment on his friend Butch Thompson’s baseball program making their second College World Series in four seasons — one of which included the suspended 2020 season:
Congrats to my friend @3strikes_AU on leading his team to the College World Series again! Big-time!! https://t.co/WgD96d7TQ7

And then he congratulated his other friend, departing Auburn Track and Field HC Ralph Spry, for his retirement:
Congrats to my friend @CoachRalphSpry on his retirement! Was an honor to work with you. Great coach and even better person!! https://t.co/I9lODFlLEn

Then, and this is how you know there is nostalgia at work here, Malzahn answered Paul Finebaum’s question, ‘What the best play in college football you’ve seen in-person?’, with the 2013 Iron Bowl:

Could Gus Malzahn return to become Auburn football HC again?
Kobe Hudson said earlier in the offseason that he’d return to Auburn if Gus Malzahn did:
Kobe Hudson: "Gus (Malzahn) comes back, I'm gonna be on the first bus back to Auburn."

Does that mean that Malzahn will jump at the first chance to return should the Bryan Harsin era crash and burn in the coming years? Probably not. Malzahn has posted plenty about his love for Orlando, most recently posting a photo of himself along with a group of UCF players and Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony:
Orlando vs. Everybody!!

What a great time with some of our guys and @The_ColeAnthony over at @DisneyParks!! pic.twitter.com/aaHimbZVqB
Being mandated to appear several times at Disney World and spend time around Disney adults because you are one of the most notable figures in Orlando naturally makes one miss the Plains.
