When former Auburn football QB Bo Nix signed an NIL deal with Milo’s last July, it was believed that it’d benefit the player as well as the program — but fast forward a year, and it’s only proving to be good for the former.

Nix, as we know, is now the starting signal-caller for Dan Lanning’s Oregon Ducks due to the hiring of his former offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham, and because of the scrutiny he constantly received on the Plains.

While there is sweet tea served in the state of Oregon, it isn’t quite the delicacy it is in the south. Milo’s itself does not have a single hamburger joint outside of Alabama, so it’s safe to say that the sweet tea/fast food company didn’t sign that deal so that they can be marketing to football fans on the west coast.

AL.com’s Joseph Goodman made a great point on the state of Nix’s Milo’s deal, saying that ‘if Oregon shocks the world in Atlanta, then I’m not quite sure which fanbase back in Alabama will be enjoying a long drink of sweet tea.’

Why Bo Nix’s NIL deal with Milo’s now looks bad for the Auburn football program

Let’s play pretend for a second and say you’re Tricia Wallwork, the Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Milo’s Tea Company, and you just signed the starting QB for Auburn football to expand visibility in the Montgomery and Birmingham markets. What would you think upon reading news that your star brand ambassador is now playing in Oregon?

You probably wouldn’t be happy about it, and you might wonder whether or not it’s worth it to negotiate with another member of the Tigers knowing the arrangement could end up targeting players in markets across the country. That’s the conundrum that AU now has with Milo’s at the very least.

Nix made big money on NIL deals signed while playing for Auburn. Let’s hope his transfer doesn’t change the game in a negative way for those looking to follow in his footsteps.
