Former Auburn football quarterback Dematrius Davis was highly complimentary of his transfer destination, Alabama State, in the wake of the Texas product’s jump from the SEC to the SWAC of the FCS.
Davis never saw the field in his lone campaign on the Plains after committing to the program between Gus Malzahn’s firing and Bryan Harsin’s hiring and was set to compete (and likely lose) in a five-way QB battle for the Tigers where he would have been competing with three third-year signal-callers and a highly-regarded 4-star freshman before he took to the portal in March.
Now, instead of competing with Zach Calzada, T.J. Finley, Robby Ashford, and Holden Geriner, Davis will be going up against Myles Crawley and Joe Owens in a Hornets QB competition that figures to be far more winnable than Auburn’s.
Former Auburn football QB Dematrius Davis says it’s been ‘all love’ with Alabama State
Per Davis, the Hornets began recruiting one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in Texas high school football history–who won two state titles, accumulated more than 13,000 total yards and won 51 of the 54 games he started as a prep player at North Shore High School near Houston–as soon as he entered the portal.
“I called (Alabama State) up, and it’s been love ever since,” Davis said to the Montgomery Advertiser. “Really just the coaches, the great attitudes everyone had, I just felt really confident coming into it.”
Davis was given no promises that he’d be the starter in Alabama’s capital city, but Hornets HC Eddie Robinson Jr. made it clear that the redshirt freshman will more than likely be QB1 since he doesn’t recruit backups in the transfer portal:
"“When you’re looking at portal kids or transfer kids, the expectation is that they are as good or better than what you already have. We’re not recruiting backups when we’re looking at portal kids.”"
Any Auburn football fans curious about how Davis will do in his next home could take I85 south to Hornet Stadium to see him firsthand.
