Auburn football fans have been on a rollercoaster ride this offseason trying to figure out who will be the starting quarterback in 2022.

For most of the summer, it was assumed that Zach Calzada was going to overcome his non-throwing shoulder injury–suffered against, coincidentally, the Tigers last November–and grab the reins of the QB1 role.

Now, it appears that not only is Calzada not going to start, but he is in fact dead last effectively in the QB battle. T.J. Finley and Robby Ashford are the ones getting first-team reps with the possibility that both will be featured in a multiple-QB offense.

The fourth QB in the room, one who is no longer seriously being considered for the starting job, is Holden Geriner. The freshman out of Savannah was called by Bryan Harsin ‘one of the best throwers I’ve coached.’ That got multiple Auburn football fans to wonder why he isn’t the starter right now:

On3’s Justin Hokanson explained why the first-year gunslinger isn’t a serious contender to be QB1:

Now, we wait until September 3rd, and perhaps wait another week until after the San Jose State game, to determine who the starter will be for a potential 2022 season bellwether game against Penn State — that QB will likely be the leader of the offense all season, barring a collapse in conference play.
