Auburn football legend Cam Newton has always believed he was the best player on the football field — a way of thinking that has led him to actually be the best player on the field countless times in his career.

But his latest claim may be a bit on the outrageous side. Speaking on the I Am Athlete podcast, Newton answered a question from fellow former NFL pro, Brandon Marshall, about whether he still believes there aren’t 32 better quarterbacks at the highest level of pro football.

Newton, while perhaps forgetting that Tom Brady is with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — or, for all we know, making sure to call out this specific division — said that he was better than every QB in the NFC South:

"“There ain’t a motherf***er really, in like, sh*t, we can say the whole NFC South God****. Sh*t, lemme stop.”"

Cam Newton was definitely better with Auburn football than Tom Brady was at Michigan

Cam Newton could very likely at least produce similar results to Andy Dalton with the New Orleans Saints and Marcus Mariota with the Atlanta Falcons. That much is very clear and reasonable.

With that said, it is very tough to justify the claim that Newton is currently a better quarterback than Tom Brady. In 2015? Absolutely. There was not a signal-caller better at the pro level than Newton. But in 2022, even in a down year by his standards, Brady still has the most completed passes in the league. Through 12 games this season, Brady has more passing yards than all but five years in Newton’s career. With age and injuries having slowed down Newton considerably, a primary means of production, his legs, are not the weapons they once were.

Even though Brady was by and large a better NFL quarterback, Newton can always hang his hat on having a more successful collegiate career with Auburn football than Brady had in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
