Paul Finebaum on recent Auburn football hire: ‘Understands every aspect of offense’
SEC Network host and notorious Birmingham-area radio personality Paul Finebaum was extremely bullish on one of freshly implemented Hugh Freeze’s recent Auburn football coordinator hires.
Finebaum said on the December 13 edition of “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning“ that new Tigers offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery knows his stuff when it comes to the schematics of play-calling due to his days working with former Houston and Baylor head coach Art Briles — noting that he’s especially savvy plotting an offensive strategy in this particularly sped-up era of the game:
"“You’re talking about (Philip Montgomery) in as OC who was working high school with Art Briles. You’re talking about somebody that understands every aspect of offense, especially where the offensive philosophies are today. I think (Freeze has) done extremely well.”"
Why Paul Finebaum is not surprised Hugh Freeze is making great Auburn football hires
Paul Finebaum has been around this business for a long time. He has seen the growth of college football into one of television networks’ most valuable broadcasting assets, and he knows the power of Auburn football given his Birmingham roots as a broadcaster.
The Auburn brand is one that holds weight with recruits and prospective coaching hires alike, and the passion that’s constantly poured in on the Plains and anywhere the Tigers are traveling contributes to one of the most cash-rich programs in the country when it comes to spending.
Ipso facto, Finebaum wasn’t surprised about Hugh Freeze’s ability to land quality coordinators:
"“With the resources that Auburn has and the money behind that school right now and the energy behind that school, you knew that he could go out there and bring in good coordinators, perhaps not to this caliber.”"
Finebaum’s tone is certainly different from some of the opinions of the local media, but, unfortunately, we have a bit under nine months to wait until we can get an effective read on the quality of these hires.
