Hugh Freeze appears to have found the next Auburn football receivers coach.
Marcus Davis, a former Auburn football receiver and current Georgia Southern receivers coach, is expected to fill the same post on the Plains.
Davis, who played four seasons under Gus Malzahn, was an integral part of Auburn’s hurry-up, no huddle attack during his time on the Plains. Notably, Davis caught four passes for 38 yards on the game-winning drive against Mississippi State in 2013 that would help spark the run to the BCS National Championship Game.
Davis As A Coach
Davis has been coaching since 2019, when he held an off-field analyst role under Malzahn. He has quickly risen to become one of the best young position coaches in the country, grading out as a 5-star position coach.
During his time at Georgia Southern under former USC head coach (and notable Auburn alum) Clay Helton, GSU’s receivers have garnered All-Sun Belt honors. This came during a time when GSU was transitioning from a spread triple option offense to a more high tempo Air Raid attack under Helton. Credit has to be given to Davis for easing that transition.
Davis As A Player
Davis is well known for his time at Auburn on Gus Malzahn’s earlier offenses, which pushed the tempo early and often and forced team to defend all eleven players on the field. He was a key cog as both a blocker at the receiver position, but also as a go-to receiver down the stretch. Davis helped Nick Marshall march Auburn down the field against Mississippi State in 2013 in route to Auburn’s first SEC win since 2011.
While Davis was not the most obvious choice for the position, Freeze could not have hired a more exciting young coach. It will be intriguing to see how recruiting goes with Davis, Carnell Williams, Zac Etheridge, and Trovon Reed leading the way.
