Auburn football quarterback target Walker Howard has spurned the Tigers to transfer to the ‘Sip and join one of the Plains’ most-hated public enemies, Lane Kiffin. As with most targets Hugh Freeze has had on his radar so far, AU has come up empty.

And perhaps that’s by design. Robby Ashford has been a vocal leader for AU since his calling out of Tank Bigsby during the October 15 Ole Miss loss and may not be replaced by a potential Freeze choice. Carnell “Cadillac” Williams certainly has Ashford’s back as the associate head coach who unlocked the Hoover product’s potential and in the process nearly matched Bryan Harsin’s win total in half as many games in 2022.

White might not have won the Tigers QB1 role anyway against Ashford. But there could be other targets Auburn football is prioritizing more.

With quarterbacks on scholarship, Hugh Freeze likely knows that Auburn football is lacking the sort of depth under center that one needs in the SEC. Another move is coming, and with Ole Miss now taking a QB, it could mean the Tigers’ mean target is squarely in sight.

Spencer Sanders was down to Ole Miss and Auburn, so Walker White’s Rebels transfer could be a sign that the Oklahoma State transfer QB could be Plains-bound. Perhaps Sanders could have eyes on the Ohio State opening instead, though, with no assurances from the AU coaching staff that he’ll have the QB1 role over Ashford.

On the other hand, Freeze could just be closing in on a target like Oregon State’s Chance Nolan to add depth to the room and not necessarily take over the starting job. They’ll be competing with Indiana for Nolan. Purdue’s Brady Allen, once seen as a potential target, is returning to West Lafayette.
