2 former Auburn football running backs during the Gus Malzahn and Bryan Harsin eras have committed to Troy in the past few days: Jordon Ingram, who entered the transfer portal on December 6, and Asa Martin, who bolted the program back in December 2018 when he signed with Miami but ultimately ended up at Memphis.

Martin committed to Troy first on January 23 after having a career-best season in 2022 for Memphis. The Decatur, Alabama product saw 121 plays from behind the line of scrimmage, which was seven fewer carries than his previous three seasons (two at Memphis, one in Auburn).

As for Ingram, the Mobile native signed with Central Michigan out of high school but transferred to AU only to receive two carries in two seasons on the Plains. Ingram was injured in practice this past October and missed the rest of the season.

Auburn football running back room to add two big-time playmakers

Having Carnell “Cadillac” Williams as the running backs coach, and now, the associate head coach, goes a long way in landing the best running backs in the state and throughout the south. It paid off in this past recruiting cycle, with Auburn football bringing on USF transfer Brian Battie and Montgomery Catholic’s 4-star running back Jeremiah Cobb.

Battie comes in after a historic season at USF, where he broke the program record for all-purpose yards and led the nation in the category. He’ll be not only the new primary backup behind starter Jarquez Hunter, but he’ll also be a key player in the return game on special teams.

As for Cobb, his senior season saw the Tigers recruit rush for 2,016 yards (11.7 yards per carry) and 23 rushing touchdowns. The No. 12 running back in the country won’t be signing his letter of intent until next month.

Throw in the returning Damari Alston, and Auburn is loaded to the gills in the running back room in Hugh Freeze’s first year.
