The Auburn football program has turned over a new leaf, and we have officially entered the Freeze Era on the Plains. Hugh Freeze became head coach just over two months ago, and since then has dramatically changed the landscape of the program, from solidarity on the staff to recruiting and beyond.
Throughout his career, spanning four different college football programs, Freeze has always maintained that calling plays on the offense is a top priority for him in addition to his various other responsibilities as head coach.
However, with the constantly changing world of college football, from recruitment to NIL to the transfer portal, in addition to the level up from Liberty to Auburn and the SEC, this year Freeze will be giving up his play-calling duties. While the head coach fully intends to be involved in the offensive game plan, Freeze will be handing off the role of primary play caller to offensive coordinator Phillip Montgomery.
Again, Freeze will be involved in the play calling, but with so many other responsibilities now on his shoulders he plans to lean on his entire offensive staff, according to Auburn Live:
"“Jake (Thorrnton), Ben (Aigamaua), Cadillac (Williams), and Marcus (Davis) and those guys that we brought to help formulate a game plan should I need to be elsewhere making sure our program is right,” Freeze said. “It’s really just the total landscape of college football and running a program. If I really do what I’ve done in the past and spend all my time game planning, preparing to call a game only.. I’m not sure that’s best for Auburn.”"
With over 20 years of coaching experience at the college level and an impressive resume, Montgomery definitely has what it takes to be Freeze’s right-hand man and successfully call plays for Auburn football this fall.
