Auburn football: Where Hugh Freeze feels QBs can most improve
In the time that Hugh Freeze has officially been the head coach of the Auburn football program, he has accomplished a great deal in the world of recruiting.
The Tigers’ recruiting class is lightyears ahead of where it was during the 2022 football season, and while credit us due to the staffers who bridged the gap between Bryan Harsin and Freeze, the new head coach’s efforts to get out on the road and forge connections with recruits had a huge impact on Auburn’s recruiting class of 2023.
However, one thing that Freeze has not really had the chance to do is get to know and assess his current players. With the recruiting dead period this month and the beginning of spring practice on February 27, now is the time for Freeze to dig in to the team.
One of the areas most in need of assessment is the quarterback room. While there is clearly lots of potential, is it enough to turn the Tigers into winners this fall? Although no quarterback was taken in the first transfer portal window, there will still be an opportunity to take one following spring training. Coach Freeze joined the Crain & Company Show earlier today and talked about where the biggest improvements need to be in the QB room ahead of the 2023 season:
"“I have met with them to try to start working on the mental side of this position because there’s some growing up that needs to take place in that regard.”"
While it’s not exactly the most comforting thing to hear about your quarterbacks, it is a nice change to have a coach that operates in reality. It’s a hard truth, but it’s one that will ultimately only benefit the quarterbacks as Auburn football players but also as men. With true leadership and strong coaching, there’s no telling how much the quarterbacks can improve before the season this fall.
