Auburn football spring training is under way, and the Tigers have completed six of the allotted fifteen practices that will culminate in A-Day on April 8. There have been several bright spots, including the performance of true freshman Keldric Faulk, but there is still much to work on for the team.

Of course, the question that everyone wants answered is about the quarterbacks. Head coach Hugh Freeze and the staff are working with three returners in TJ Finley, Robby Ashford, and Holden Geriner after failing to pick up a transfer in the first portal window. While picking up a transfer this summer is still an option, the trio will have to do for now.

Freeze was asked by the media for an update on the position group following the first spring scrimmage, and the answer wasn’t exactly music to the ears of Auburn football fans. According to Freeze, there are two position groups that could still use a lot of work ahead of the 2023 season, per Auburn Undercover:

"Looking at the passing game as a whole, Auburn’s new head coach said, “The two positions that stand out to me right now where we just have a long way to go are the quarterback room and the wide receiver room. I am not saying we have arrived at other spots. Those are the farthest off because they are probably–because, truthfully, we ask them to do the most and it is brand new to them."

Once again, this points to the fact that for the past two years, the Tigers have not exactly been a well-coached team, and a lot of their struggles stem from that. Holden Geriner is still quite young, and Robby Ashford played his first season of college football ever under Bryan Harsin, and that was only after he was forced to fill in for TJ Finley after his injury.

Coach Freeze said that the players in both positions are extremely coachable, and they want to improve, and that’s a positive sign. Hopefully by the time they get a few more practices under their belt there will be fewer inconsistencies and more breakthroughs.
