Auburn basketball is one of the many programs in pursuit of fifth-year Syracuse guard Joseph Girard III, who announced he will be leaving central New York following the retirement of Jim Boeheim following the Orange’s elimination from the 2023 ACC Tournament. The New York Times’ Adam Zagoria revealed the long list of suitors, which includes several SEC schools as well as programs from the Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, Pac-12, Big East, and Atlantic-10:
According to Auburn Wire’s Daniel Locke, such an addition would be a major boost for the Auburn basketball backcourt — one set to lose Zep Jasper this offseason:
“Landing Girard would go a long way toward building up the guard position for the Tigers,” Lock said. “At this point, the only new face joining Auburn this fall is Aden Holloway, the No. 6 point guard in the class of 2023 according to 247Sports.”
Wendell Green Jr. loves Auburn basketball but wouldn’t commit to future
With Chance Westry set to return and Holloway making his way to the Plains, there are plenty of questions surrounding the likes of Wendell Green Jr. this offseason. Green has two years of eligibility left due to his freshman year taking place during the 2020-21 COVID-stricken season, but he has not committed to his future yet as he told the crew of The Next Round on March 23.
“For me, I love Auburn, I haven’t thought about it too much yet…that’s a conversation I’m gonna have with my family and, you know, we’re gonna see what’s happening next,” Green said.
The potential addition of Girard, or any other transfer portal guard, could play a major role in what Green does next.
