While there have not been a lot of Auburn football players entering the transfer portal so far, the Tigers have lost a few guys, and some at key positions on the team. Quite a few reserve linebackers entered the portal, diminishing the depth at that position, including Desmond Tisdol, Kameron Brown, and Powell Gordon.
Another player to enter was Tar’Varish Dawson, a redshirt sophomore wide receiver that was recruited from Florida and was a 4-star prospect out of high school. Though Dawson was a player that was expected to eventually break out and earn a role in the WR room, he totaled only 30 receiving yards and 10 rushing yards during his time on the Plains.
Dawson notably caught an impressive long pass during the Tigers’ A-Day game, but ultimately decided it was time for a fresh start with a new program. Over the weekend, Dawson announced he will continue his college football career with the Cincinnati Bearcats.
According to Cincy on the Prowl, Dawson is a welcome addition to the Bearcats’ wide receivers room and will add needed experience and speed alongside several other transfers that joined the program.
Dawson is the second of Auburn football’s recent transfers to announce their new program, following reserve linebacker Kameron Brown. The senior LB entered the portal as a graduate transfer and will finish up both his graduate degree and his football career at UT-Chatanooga.
The Tigers are working hard to recruit both wide receivers and linebackers, especially edge rushers, from the transfer portal ahead of the 2023 season. The LBs need more depth with so many entering the portal, and the wide receivers’ room needs talent after struggling to produce a standout, go-to receiver over the past few years.
