BH tabs two ‘most logical’ SEC football fits for conference expansion
The world of college football has undergone a lot of changes over the past few years, and it doesn’t seem like it will stop anytime soon. Between the college football playoffs, the NCAA transfer portal, the expansion of SEC football to include Oklahoma and Texas, and the rumors swirling about both the ACC and Pac-12 conferences, there could be more big changes on the way.
For quite some time, the SEC has been known as the best of the best. Since the first college football playoff took place in 2014, an SEC team has taken home the title six of the nine years. In several playoffs, there have been multiple SEC teams competing for the crown, and an SEC team has won the playoffs for the last four years in a row.
It has already been decided that the conference will add two more programs in 2024, making Oklahoma and Texas SEC football teams. But if the conference were to take on more programs should the ACC fall apart, which teams would add value to the league’s most elite conference?
According to BamaHammer expert Ronald Evans, Florida State and Clemson are the two most logical fits to join the SEC:
"The two programs are the most logical fits for the SEC. Their markets are small but in the important metric of ‘brand-building’ immediate rivalries and future rivalries coming from the Noles and the Tigers are considerable."
Geographically, it makes a lot of sense for FSU to join the SEC. The school is just three and a half hours south of Auburn, where Tuscaloosa is two and a half and Athens is nearly three. They would be able to have a natural rivalry with Florida, and there is major potential for a minor rivalry with Auburn football, especially after what happened in 2013.
With two CFP wins under their belt, Clemson would also make sense in terms of adding value to the conference, and it would spice up their rivalry with South Carolina if they were both SEC football teams.
