Central-Phenix City wideout Cameron Coleman, who snubbed Auburn football in a Fourth of July shocker to join Texas A&M instead, has pushed the Aggies into the top spot on Mike Farrell of Mike Farrell Sports‘ “hottest teams on the recruiting trail” rankings.

“WR Cam Coleman from Alabama is a massive get and continues a hot trend for Jimbo Fisher,” Farrell prefaced before saying, “Nine commitments since June 22 have pushed them into the national top 10.”

Coleman, along with Red Devils defensive back Rydarrius “Red” Morgan, spurned the Plains — which is just a 40-minute drive from Phenix City — in order to join an out-of-state Power Five program. His reasoning for choosing TAMU over AU is perhaps the most puzzling part of it all…

“What stood out about Texas A&M was how I felt like home every time I went there,” Coleman said (h/t On3’s Hayes Fawcett). “From the coaching staff, to spending time with my future teammates. We are all going to stop playing football one day and that’s where the education aspect and Aggie Network comes into play and it’s an amazing network.”

Auburn football reputation not helping land local star recruits

Phenix City is right on the border of Georgia, and while Columbus, right over the Chattahoochee River Bridge, is very much orange and blue territory, the talk of the region has been Georgia over the past several seasons. Not Auburn. In fact, AU is more of a punchline to locals at this point given the Gus Malzahn firing mess and the even uglier Bryan Harsin tenure/ouster.

This reputation could be hurting all of the progress Hugh Freeze has tried to make in the region — and even across the state — and could have had a hand in Central’s prospects frequently choosing anyone but Auburn.

Of course, what really could be what has done the Tigers in with Central is the fact that Bo Nix’s father Patrick is the Red Devils’ head coach. With the way Bo’s departure has been handled, it may take an indefinite while until Patrick is willing to send his best recruits to AU.
