Benched 5-star Alabama QB pitched as Auburn transfer portal target

Benched 5-star Alabama redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Simpson was pitched as a potential Auburn football transfer portal target in the offseason by Auburn Daily’s Lance Dawe; this, in the wake of myriad QB room issues for the Tigers during the 2023 season.

Simpson, a Class of 2022 recruit out of Martin, Tennessee, was offered by AU back in 2019 under Gus Malzahn’s coaching staff. Thus far in his two years in Tuscaloosa, Simpson hasn’t been able to showcase his talents. Through Week 8 of the 2023 season, Simpson has thrown 11 passes total — partly because of his 14.8 QBR when he did get a chance against USF on September 16.

With Jalen Milroe taking the reins of the Crimson Tide offense, Simpson may not get opportunities moving forward. True freshman Dylan Lonergan looks like he’s next in line whenever Milroe decides to move on to whatever is next. Hence the possibility a transfer portal visit was essentially predicted by Dawe.

Georgia 4-star also listed as Auburn football quarterback target

Not only was the prospect of Hugh Freeze’s program poaching an Alabama blue-chip proposed, but a heist from Georgia’s quarterback room was also floated. Gunner Stockton, another former Auburn target, was listed by Dawe.

Stockton doesn’t have a touchdown in his career, but he does have an interception against UAB on his record from the Bulldogs’ September 23 matchup with the Blazers; a predictable 49-21 victory for Georgia. Stuck behind Carson Beck in Athens, Stockton has every reason to explore the transfer portal with the current QB likely to exercise at least another year of eligibility. Simpson and Stockton are far from slam dunk steals if Freeze was able to pull either off, but both are great potential competition for incoming Class of 2024 freshman Walker White out of Little Rock Christian Academy.
