Should the Auburn football program lose one, if not several, quarterbacks during the offseason due to a lack of opportunity, there is a grad transfer from the Birmingham area (Calera) who was once a star at Georgia State who’s currently sitting in the transfer portal: Cornelious “Quad” Brown IV.

During the 2020 season, Brown eclipsed 300 yards through the air in a single game three times under center for the Panthers and had 24 all-purpose touchdowns to 10 interceptions. He never got a chance to play the Tigers when Georgia State visited the Plains on September 25, 2021, being benched and eventually leaving Atlanta for Martin, Tennessee. He only lasted a year at UT-Martin, though, and ended up at Alabama A&M; where he has once again taken to the portal.

One may view these career moves as every reason not to bring the former Calera star aboard. But when a player puts up the stats Brown did in 2020, — against quality opponents too, like South Alabama and Georgia Southern — it’s worth a shot to see if he can channel that magic during his final year of eligibility, given his vast experience across three different programs, and become a hometown hero on the Plains.

Or simply provide depth for a QB room that could have question marks following a 2023 season that has lacked clarity at the position due to an insistence on not sticking to a single signal-caller.

Cornelious Brown IV has a playstyle that could work within the Auburn football offense

In truth, grabbing a guy like Brown would mainly be to push a returning Payton Thorne, Robby Ashford, and/or Holden Geriner, while providing a potential fill-in starter during Walker White’s freshman season if Hugh Freeze doesn’t feel comfortable handing the ball to the Little Rock Christian Academy star from the jump.

Still, Quad’s style of play is that of a passer first, but with the ability to improvise and do the spectacular if given enough room to operate in the open field. Brown would be a great fit for what Freeze does as a big-armed dual-threat, and he’d certainly earn the head coach brownie points for giving a former local star a shot.
