247Sports editor wants Alabama and Ohio State to get the FSU and Clemson treatment
247Sports' Bud Elliott believes Alabama and Ohio State -- and, while not mentioned, Michigan, Texas, Georgia, and Notre Dame -- should get the same treatment FSU and Clemson got for wanting a larger revenue share in their conference. Because now the Crimson Tide, Buckeyes, Wolverines, Longhorns, Bulldogs, and Fighting Irish could be in a position to demand a larger piece of the pie for the same reason: they are generating the lion's share of the revenue due to TV ratings.
"We’ve said it forever," Elliott prefaced before saying, "No way Bama & Ohio State continue to share equal with schools that are below replacement level like Miss State & Purdue. It’s a biz. And that’s Not good biz.
"Everyone to vilify these schools like they have FSU and Clemson?"
Dellenger posted a snippet from a piece via Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger where Gene Smith, the former Ohio State athletic director, discussed uneven revenue share.
“It’s a concept that has to be considered for certain level schools,” said Smith regarding unequal distribution. “Whether or not it can be done, I don’t know, but there is a reality to what certain schools bring to their conference. And it needs to be considered, but I do believe in the conference structure. Ensuring other schools in the conference maintain significant financial support is critical.”
FSU and Clemson may have changed college football with demands for ACC
FSU and Clemson are likely returning to the ACC, though nothing is for certain in modern college football. Assuming the Noles and Tigers end up staying put, though, it's fair to say that the state of the sport's media rights has changed forever.
FSU and Clemson just normalized holding a conference for ransom to get the best payday possible. Those two schools have far less market share than Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Michigan, Ohio State, and Notre Dame.
Should those schools hold the SEC and Big Ten as accountable as FSU and Clemson did the ACC, the NCAA as we know it could be completely upended.
