Jase Mathews, a five-star wide receiver who the Ole Miss Rebels are actively trying to flip from the Auburn Tigers, just suffered a season-ending injury, subsequently making his high school football career come to an end.
Mathews suffered an ACL injury just two games into his senior season. Now, he will turn his attention to rehab and returning to the field, but this time, for the Tigers.
Before injuring his ACL, Mathews had already earned 176 yards and two touchdowns on just eight receptions, proving why he was a top-10 wideout in the class of 2026.
Despite committing to Auburn and head coach Hugh Freeze, the Rebels have refused to back down, still working to change Mathews’ mind, hopefully flipping his commitment from the Tigers.
Now, Mathews is a Mississippi native, so it would make sense if he were to stay home instead of traveling across state lines. However, he received an offer from Ole Miss before Auburn, and he took an official visit with the Rebels before the Tigers.
Still, he chose Auburn over any other program that had offered, a good indication that the five-star wideout might decide to stick around.
In fact, just this week, when speaking to Rivals and On3’s Hayes Fawcett, Mathews said, “War Eagle all the way.”

Reports did not specify if Mathews had suffered a completely torn ACL or if it was a lesser injury, but they did state that he would sit out for the remainder of his senior season.
More likely than not, as he goes through his recovery process, Mathews will join the Tigers in Auburn, a frequent practice of high school prospects moving up to the collegiate level, earning more practice reps ahead of their true-freshman season at a program.
Over the last three years (and two games), Mathews earned nearly 2,200 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns on 128 receptions. He also had 11 carries for 154 rushing yards and a touchdown. The cherry on top? He had a completed pass during his junior season for a 20-yard touchdown.
