Always be 'crootin'. That is the nature of the beast in college football, especially in the SEC. While Alex Golesh has plenty of things to keep an eye on ahead of his first season at Auburn, there is a chance he could end up landing a quarterback in 2027 by Monday evening. That is because three-star recruit Chance Thomas will be making his decision over on CBS Sports on Monday, May 11 at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Thomas will be deciding between these Power Four schools. Could it end up being Auburn for him?

  • Auburn Tigers
  • Kansas Jayhawks
  • Utah Utes

At this time, Thomas seems to be leaning closer to Kansas than anything, followed up next by Utah...

According to the 247Sports Composite, Thomas is the No. 59 player from California, the No. 42 quarterback in his class, and the No. 729 overall prospect in the 2027 recruiting cycle. Thomas may have 22 official offers, but he is really only looking at these three schools. While he has an upcoming visit to Kansas booked for June 5, there is a non-zero chance he may end up at Utah or even Auburn.

There is another name out there for Auburn fans to keep close tabs on in quarterback recruitment...

Alex Golesh, Auburn wait to see what 3-star QB Chance Thomas decides

Let's be real. With Kansas seeming like the heavy favorite to land Thomas' three-star commitment on Monday evening, Auburn may need to pivot towards another quarterback in the 2027 cycle. Recent developments suggest it might be a guy from the neighboring state of Georgia. Another three-star in Gary Chatman Jr. has now been crystal balled to Auburn after just de-committing from Wake Forest...

Of course, Chatman is only the No. 1,064 recruit in the 2027 recruiting cycle. He is only the 123rd prospect from Georgia, as well as the No. 63 quarterback in this recruiting class. Of course, he plays much closer to Auburn than does Thomas. Snellville in Gwinnett County, Georgia is much closer to Auburn than Thomas' native California. Right now, this feels like Thomas is not going to pick Auburn.

So what does this mean for Auburn? The Tigers need to go full-steam ahead with their recruitment. Golesh has been instrumental in getting their recruitment turned around of late, but there is still work to be done. People, players, and coaches know what he is capable of leading a Group of Five team. South Florida was great under him. While he has coached in the SEC before, it was as an assistant...

Right now, Auburn needs to wait for the next domino to fall in recruitment, and that may be Thomas.
