Auburn Tigers head coach Alex Golesh nabbed 4-star East St. Louis running back Myson Johnson-Cook's commitment on Saturday, shocking the Miami Hurricanes and the rest of the College Football world in the process. Johnson-Cook is the No. 4 running back in the 2027 class and No. 46 player overall, per 247Sports' Composite.
It was a massive win for Golesh, who Saturday Blitz's Nicholas Rome believes had his eyes on Johnson-Cook during his time coaching the USF Bulls, but ultimately knew he couldn't convince him to play in Tampa for an American Conference program.
"Mario Cristobal and Miami losing out in the recruitment of Myson Johnson-Cook is truly stunning. The Hurricanes were seemingly setting the pace in this recruitment for a long time, and it even looked like at times the Canes could’ve landed a commitment," Rome prefaced before saying, "Alex Golesh just shared the state of Florida with Mario Cristobal and the Canes, and he likely remembers a few recruits he wanted but lost to the In-State giants. Now Alex Golesh is at a school in Auburn that has the recruiting juice to reel in high level recruits from all over the country."
Alex Golesh admitted he couldn't win it all at USF
Johnson-Cook is a symptom of Golesh's switch from USF to Auburn. And he knows it. Per Golesh during an interview with USA Today last week, "I felt like you could win a national title here. ... at South Florida, I think you and everybody else knows you never were going to get there.”
The Tigers have long produced elite talent at the running back position, sending Tank Bigsby and Jarquez Hunter to the NFL even during the least successful five-year run since the 1940s, so it's not shocking to see another sign on the dotted line. Johnson-Cook is likely no stranger to Auburn's illustrious history at the position.
For Golesh, though, this is a new development. His fast-paced offense will benefit from finally having elite talent at the RB spot. More importantly, though, Golesh is at a program that can outrecruit "The U."
That's the difference in the Loveliest Village from Temple Terrace. And Golesh is only getting started.
