Auburn University AD John Cohen made the decision to officially retire Cam Newton's No. 2. The school announced on Monday that Newton's jersey number will go up in the rafters ahead of the Georgia Bulldogs matchup on October 11.
Cohen honored Newton's legendary 2010 Heisman-winning campaign in a press release statement.
“Cam Newton not only led Auburn to a national championship in 2010, but he produced one of the most prolific seasons ever by a college football player. Retiring Cam’s jersey number is a fitting way to celebrate his lasting impact on Auburn University and Auburn Athletics for all time," Cohen said.
Hugh Freeze shared a similar sentiment.
“Cam is one of the greatest players to wear an Auburn uniform and it is only fitting that he has his No. 2 jersey retired. We look forward to honoring and celebrating Cam this season with this much-deserved recognition," Freeze said.
As for Newton's statement, he did right by honoring the three offensive players who had their numbers retired before him.
“Auburn will always be home to me," Newton said. "The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired alongside legends like Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, and Terry Beasley is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!”
Panthers must now follow Tigers' lead, retire Cam Newton's number
To borrow from Newton's former Tigers teammate Trovon Reed, "We ain't done yet!"
Newton's No. 1 with the Carolina Panthers shouldn't be available to wear either. While Newton never reached the mountaintop in Charlotte like he did on the Plains, he was an MVP who willed the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2016.
Interestingly enough, like Auburn, Carolina hasn't let anyone wear it. And they've had requests, like the Tigers did with Deuce Knight, but the Panthers never gave in.
Ipso facto, it's only a matter of time before Newton's No. 1 and No. 2 are retired.
