Deuce Knight wearing No. 2 for Auburn football 'off the table' in near term after Cam Newton comments

Deuce Knight won't be wearing the No. 2 for Auburn football. Instead, Knight will wear No. 9 for the Tigers.

If you're wondering why that is, look no further than Cam Newton's comments insinuating he's insulted at the idea of a freshman taking his number -- which isn't technically retired but hasn't been worn since Auburn's 2010/2011 BCS National Championship season.

As Saturday Down South's Spenser Davis relays, Knight likely won't be wearing the No. 2 in the near term anytime soon.

"He’s not expected to start for Auburn in 2025 with Jackson Arnold joining the program, but he could be called upon at some point in the near future," Davis wrote of Knight.

"At least in the near-term, it seems Knight wearing No. 2 for Auburn is off the table."

Newton showed no mercy explaining why he didn't want Knight in his number.

"It's a f*** no for me. I like Deuce, played against him. But in this day and age bro, everything is earned. And what you did in high school, no one gives a f*** in college. I really hope that you're good. I really hope that you stay at Auburn. I really hope that you can do everything that you're going to say as an avid, diehard Auburn fan," Newton said on his "4th&1" podcast.

"It's easier said than done, bro. Like win the locker room first. F*** numbers. F*** entitlement. F*** all that s***. Bro, win a game. Because the quarterback play over the years at Auburn has been egregious. It's been satanic. It's been something that I can't even watch."

If Knight can earn that number by usurping Jackson Arnold in the next three years, that No. 2 could be his.

But there's a possibility he never sees a snap if Arnold wins the QB1 role, Ashton Daniels gets any backup reps, and Knight looks for a new home in 2026 so he can see the field.

In that case, Newton will have made the right call.
