Auburn started fall camp this week. Even though there wasn’t a lot to see on the first day, the coaches were electric and made a major point to not waste any reps during this crucial time, especially when they coached up WR Brian Williams Jr.
Most activities were against air, but there was still enough to make me have to think about who has to dominate these next few weeks to stay at the top of the two-deep.
I got to ask The Barn’s Kyle Rush while he was live on YouTube, "Who is the one player who needs to dominate these next 13 days?” He took a moment, answering by turning it into two parts: who needed to dominate because they could be behind, and who needed to dominate to continue to help Auburn excel at a team-wide level.
He started with the most obvious one besides Bryce Cain: Christian Neptune. Yesterday morning, even Rush himself was impressed with Neptune’s pop in and out of routes. But there is this freshman named DeShawn Spencer, whom I have mentioned before, who is just playing lights-out football and has been getting snaps at the starting slot position. This is a serious up-and-coming star for Auburn.
So, of course, Neptune is going to be the guy who could be left out of the rotation. Cain is also in this same argument, even though there is a size difference. Not to take away from his answer; it was a fantastic answer... but I was just hoping more for the possibility of OLB Jaquez Wilkes being the one mentioned.
Stanton Ramil touted as a difference maker
Ramil is touted as a highly rated tackle coming in from Michigan State. He was a graduate of Thompson High School, where he won two state championships. After his three years up north, Stanton returned to Alabama, and specifically to Auburn, to finish his career where it started. Rush knew this and would follow up his answer to my question with OT Stanton Ramil and his recovery.
“Ramil has the ability to be the difference between Auburn being just okay and something fun to watch," Rush said.
That is a huge boost in confidence for Ramil after head coach Alex Golesh finally gave an answer regarding his health. If he has the ability to change how this offensive line looks solely on his gameplay alone, that is big-time potential. That could be first-round draft pick potential if he dominates like Rush says he can. He is a junior, so he can declare if he wants, or he could return for his senior campaign.
If Ramil can be healthy like Golesh thinks he is, maybe it could be the second coming of another Auburn great, Greg Robinson, on the optimistic side.
