The Auburn football freshmen players are keeping the pressure on as the Tigers return to action

Despite the fact that the Auburn football program has struggled to win games this season, the silver lining has been the production of the young additions to the team. All over the roster, true freshmen players have had to step up, whether it is due to injury or roster gaps, and their talent is shining through despite their ages.

Freshman wide receiver Malcolm Simmons didn't begin working with the Tigers until the summer but has been one of the most productive pass-catchers on the team thanks to his preparation and his determination to be great, second only to senior Penn State transfer KeAndre Lambert-Smith.

"I first came in, coach (Davis) was telling me as long as you get the plays down and learn the offense, you're going to be special," Simmons said, per Auburn Undercover. "And me taking it day by day, week by week, learning everything and getting familiar with the offense. I mean, ain't no telling what I'll be able to do for these next six games."

Meanwhile, on the defense, a trio of true freshmen are expected to get significant playing time, and Jay Crawford is expected to start. Crawford has had to step up in a big way in the wake of Champ Anthony's injury, but linebacker Eugene Asante has complete faith in his younger teammate.

“We are kind of throwing Jay Crawford in the fire, but we’re always emphasizing that he’s not a freshman anymore,” said Asante, per Auburn Rivals. “We’re like ‘Bro, you’re built for it.’ He’s certainly somebody that came into college ready to play. He doesn’t carry himself as a freshman. I know he’s going to have a great game."

The Tigers will kick off from Columbia, Missouri, on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
