Auburn football playing as well as Army, Indiana, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Texas but is somehow still bad

SportsGrid's Ben Stevens stuck a proverbial knife into the metaphorical hearts of Auburn football fans everywhere sharing a stat that illustrates how the Tigers are a far better team than their record indicates.

"27 FBS offenses average at least 6.5 yards per play this season. 29 FBS defenses allow 5.0 yards per play or less this season," Stevens prefaced before saying, "Only seven (7) FBS teams are doing BOTH: Army, Auburn, Indiana, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Texas."

So Auburn is playing to the caliber of three undefeated teams and three top-20 teams but losing double the number of games they're winning. The Tigers are playing to the level of a ranked team on both sides of the ball but is losing SEC also-rans like Oklahoma and Arkansas. Not to mention Cal, the only team in the country with a loss to FSU on their record.

Does it get more torturous as a football fan?

Auburn football is turning the ball over too much to win

Between Payton Thorne, Hank Brown, Jarquez Hunter, and the various other RBs and punt returners coughing up the ball, Auburn is not in a position to win football games -- especially when the mistakes are as poorly timed as they've been.

Holding onto the ball is a quick-fix for what the Tigers are struggling through. Now you just worry about whether or not AU is able to maintain their dominant play on both sides of the ball.

Because a statistical regression is more likely than not from a pure numbers standpoint. But it'd be one step forward, two steps back if the turnovers stop but the level of play diminishes.
