Auburn football has been named one of the most disappointing college football teams in 2024

In 2023, the Auburn football team was going through its first season under new head coach Hugh Freeze and things were okay. The Tigers won a few conference games and earned bowl eligibility by the skin of their teeth, and then in the offseason secured the #8 recruiting class in the nation.

While last season was nothing to get excited about, there was a lot of hope for the 2024 season. The new wide receivers in action, Payton Thorne with a full offseason on the Plains, new assistant coaches with better plans for success.

Unfortunately, while things may be improving behind the scenes, the Tigers are struggling to find success on the football field and look like a worse team than last year. If there is a way to lose the game, the Auburn Tigers will find it, and they have been plagued by turnovers and poor decisions all season.

It's no surprise that CBS Sports' John Talty put Auburn football at the top of his list of disappointing programs this season. With a 2-5 record and no conference wins, things aren't looking too hot for the Tigers.

"In Year 2 of the Hugh Freeze regime, Auburn was supposed to take a leap into the eight or nine win territory," writes Talty. "Auburn heavily invested in acquiring top position players, believing with the right surrounding cast, quarterback Payton Thorne would return to the version that guided Michigan State to a 11-2 record in 2021. TV cameras keep showing Thorne and Freeze bickering at each other on the sideline and the Tigers are all but assured of missing a bowl game. Like another team on this list, Auburn has displayed an incredible ability to blow games it should have won. It all builds to Freeze having a worse record (8-12) than his predecessor Bryan Harsin (9-11) had through 20 games. Harsin, of course, was fired after his 21st game."

The current state of affairs within Auburn football is mindblowing. For now, fans will have to be satisfied with getting through this season and hoping another top recruiting class will be enough to change things next season.
