It has been nearly 15 years since the Auburn Tigers won their last college football National Championship in 2011, led by legendary quarterback Cam Newton.

However, it has been just a few hours since the Tigers celebrated their titles.

On Tuesday, Aug. 19, Auburn announced that it would claim four additional National Championships, adding the 1910, 1914, 1958, and 2004 titles to its trophy case.

Almost immediately, the football program took to installing the four new years alongside their previously claimed titles from 1913, 1957, 1983, 1993, and 2010.

Now, this doesn't mean that Auburn magically went back in time and rewrote history to win the National Championship games from the additional four years. However, the Tigers are leaning into their "unclaimed" titles.

This means Auburn finished the year as the No. 1 team in the country on at least one national poll. This doesn't mean that the Tigers were actually the No. 1 team in the country, and it doesn't even mean that the country will suddenly recognize the Tigers as the champions from that season.

How did Auburn claim four more National Championships?

  • 1910: Maxwell Ratings (Loren Maxwell), College Football Rankings (Kyle Matschke)
  • 1914: James Howell's Power Ratings System
  • 1958: Montgomery Full Season Championship (David Montgomery)
  • 2004: Numerous college football ratings (Darryl Perry Ratings, GBE College Football Ratings)

Now, the 1957 and 2010 titles are the years that the Tigers won the actual Championships and earned the No. 1 overall ranking in the AP Top 25 Poll, which is how the country currently acknowledges as the true national champion.

However, in 1913, 1983, and 1993, Auburn finished the year as the No. 1 team in the nation according to various polls and power ratings. Now, the Tigers are simply leaning into the four other years that they finished atop the country according to other polls and power ratings.

So, now the Auburn Tigers can lay claim to nine total National Championships as they strive to secure their 10th.

Auburn kicks off its 2025 season with a game against the Baylor Bears on Friday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. CT. The matchup will be broadcast on FOX.
