In today's edition of Auburn Tigers News, Cam Newton's #2 will be retired, and a defensive lineman has been suspended indefinitely
15 years after he led Auburn football to an undefeated season that resulted in a national championship, Cam Newton's #2 jersey will finally be retired. He will be the fourth player in program history to have his number retired, and will be honored at the October 11 home football game against Georgia.
"Auburn will always be home to me," Newton said, per Auburn Undercover. "The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired alongside legends like Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, and Terry Beasley is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!"
In his lone season on the Plains, Newton threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns and rushed for an additional 1,473 yards and 20 touchdowns. The Tigers beat the Oregon Ducks in the BCS title game.
After winning the national championship and the Heisman Trophy at Auburn, Newton played 11 seasons in the NFL. He earned Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2011 and was MVP in 2015.
A defensive lineman has been suspended indefinitely
In his press conference on Monday, Auburn football Head Coach Hugh Freeze told the media that freshman defensive tackle Antonio Coleman has been suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules.
A 4-star recruit out of high school from Saraland, Alabama, Coleman spent his recruitment flip-flopping back and forth between Auburn and Alabama. Since arriving on campus, he has worked at the defensive end and defensive tackle positions.
Coleman is the second player to be recently suspended, following freshman tight end Hollis Davidson, who was arrested for felony drug possession.
