Auburn football lost its entire quarterback room during the December transfer portal cycle. Payton Thorne ran out of eligibility, but Hank Brown left for Iowa, Walker White committed to Baylor -- sending a parting shot to Hugh Freeze on his way out -- and Holden Geriner now has committed to Texas State.

Auburn Wire's Brian Hauch sees Geriner following a similar path to TJ Finley, who also played in San Marcos, though where hasn't he played.

"Now headed to Texas State, Geriner follows the same path former Auburn quarterback T.J. Finlay took a few seasons ago. Finlay, who started his career at LSU before transferring to Auburn, infamously took over the signal-caller role from Bo Nix during Bryan Harsin’s tenure on the Plains before transferring to Texas State in 2023. He was extremely successful during his time with the Bobcats, indicating Geriner could end up prospering as well at a less talented program where he could earn more snaps," Hauch wrote.

Geriner is not guaranteed to start right away for the Bobcats. Texas State head coach GJ Kinne is a major believer in Brad Jackson, who will be Geriner's primary competition.

“He’s really smart and super talented,” Kinne said in November, per The University Star. “He carries himself the right way. I think the guys on the team have a lot of confidence in him. That’s one thing about playing the quarterback position: it’s if the other guys have confidence and belief in you, and I know our guys have a lot of confidence in Brad.”

Geriner has 20 pass attempts in his career while Jackson has 15. Both lack experience but bring in impressive passing pedigrees to San Marcos.
