Knocking off the No. 1 team in the country just doesn't go as far as it used to. How else can you explain Auburn's 27-24 upset over Georgia in Athens not placing the Tigers in the AP Top 25 Poll for Week 8?
Auburn received 61 votes, leaving them as the third team left out of the top 25 behind Oklahoma State (128 votes) and Oregon (79 votes).
The Tigers weren't the only program that was robbed of the poll, though.
Right behind them was one of the six remaining unbeatens, James Madison. Why no love for the Dukes?
Here were the five teams screwed in this week's poll:
Auburn
Sure, Auburn has two early losses. We know the SEC is a mightier challenge than the Big 12, though, and yet a 5-1 Arizona that has beaten no one is ahead of them. The Wildcats don't have a win anywhere near as resume-defining as UGA. While we're at it, why the Boise State love? The Broncos have only beaten one team of note in Western Michigan. Almost beating the Ducks is Boise State's most significant accomplishment. Within the SEC, Missouri is also overrated, having no wins nearly as significant as beating the Dawgs. The Gators are good, but still not comparable. Plus, Mizzou beat Florida in Columbia, not on the road.
James Madison
Is it Billy Napier? Is he the problem? After a rough stint at UF, Napier's reputation hasn't caught up to the results on the field. JMU is steamrolling most opponents and should sleepwalk to another Sun Belt Championship. Perhaps being in such a weak conference is the reason for the lack of polling love. An imminent move to the American Conference may fix. Maybe the issue was the horrid CFP showing against Oregon last December.
Florida
Ever-so-slight complaint since the Gators are ranked, but how can it be justified that Florida is ranked lower than Texas? This may be a case of beating Auburn not holding as much weight as it should. Beating the Longhorns, Rebels, and Tigers is a damn good resume.
Wake Forest
Wake Forest is demolishing teams and only has a loss to a (questionably) No. 1 Miami. With a win over Louisville, the Demon Deacons have a case to be higher. They're not complaining about No. 17 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, though.
Iowa
With only a loss to Ohio State on its record, Iowa should be ranked higher than Houston, whose lone loss was to a lower-ranked Texas Tech. Both teams should be higher than Alabama, the highest-ranked two-loss team at No. 13, though.
