Slowly but surely, Alex Golesh is really starting to figure it out on the recruiting trails at Auburn. The former South Florida head coach spent time in the SEC previously as Josh Heupel's greatest disciple at Tennessee. Together, they saw the Vols achieve things they had not done in years... With it being a frustrating decade for Auburn, now is the perfect time to turn the page by winning big in recruitment.

Heading into Sunday, three-star linebacker Kareem Palmer was choosing between three programs...

  • Auburn Tigers
  • Mississippi State Bulldogs
  • Texas A&M Aggies

After the Hayes Fawcett graphic dropped, Palmer made it be known that he was heading to Auburn.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Palmer is the No. 61 player from Georgia, the No. 39 linebacker in the country, and the No. 505 overall prospect in the 2027 cycle. He had 22 offers coming in, but chose Auburn over Mississippi State and Texas A&M. Palmer has an official visit lined up with Auburn on June 19. He also has ones with Ole Miss (June 5) and Mississippi State (June 12).

What all can we glean from Palmer's big decision on Sunday morning to head to the Auburn Tigers?

3-star LB Kareem Palmer committed to Auburn for a very smart reason

Palmer told Fawcett of On3/Rivals that "Every level requires another version of yourself." While he could have stayed in-state at Georgia Tech, Georgia was nowhere to be found in his recruitment... The Dawgs are not winning very much on the recruiting trail of late. With UGA being somewhat Linebacker U, this could be used as a source of motivation for Palmer. His other finalists do mean something, too.

The Texas A&M inclusion is probably that of prestige. The Aggies recruit phenomenally under Mike Elko. While Palmer did technically have an offer from A&M, it always felt like an extreme long shot for him to commit there. The real big fish to fry here is Palmer chose to play closer to home at Auburn, as opposed to going another state over to suit up for Mississippi State or Ole Miss. It speaks volumes...

This may indicate that Palmer may be of the belief that Golesh is going to thrive in his new role at Auburn. He did extraordinary things at South Florida. Never forget that... While Mississippi State does play hard for Jeff Lebby, he is an offensive-minded coach who needs to win more games than he loses to prevent himself going on the hot seat. Pete Golding is entering his first full year at Ole Miss...

So to tie a bow on this, Golesh needs more recruits who have an edge about them and a yearning for self-improvement. Palmer seems to embody this. Whenever Auburn is up to standard in SEC play, the Tigers usually are ferocious inside their defensive front-seven. In time, Palmer can become a vibrant part of their defense. For now, Auburn fans can enjoy the fact they beat out two SEC teams for him.

It may be hard to see from the outside, but everything seems to be a calculated build-up for Golesh.
