Auburn’s running back room has taken another hit with the announcement that Durell Robinson is set to enter the transfer portal.
This will be the fourth time Robinson has transferred, starting his career at Charlotte, then departing for UConn, and then coming to the Plains last season. It was a weird season for the Seat Pleasant, Md., native, as he suffered a “freak injury” to his thigh in the second game against Ball State that required surgery. He would miss the next seven games, appearing against Vanderbilt on Nov. 8, but not seeing a carry for the rest of the season.
Brought in as a potential backup to Damari Alston and Jeremiah Cobb, Robinson found himself playing early as Alston suffered a shoulder injury in the season-opening win against Baylor. On two rushing attempts against Ball State in Week 2, he rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown. If it weren’t for the injury that kept him out all but four games, he would have been counted on more as Alston decided sit out and take a redshirt following the 20-10 loss to Georgia on Oct. 11, but the Tigers had to count on Cobb and true freshman Omar Mabson to carry the load in the backfield.
Yet another Auburn player in portal
With Robinson entering the portal, he becomes the 31st Auburn player to do so since Alex Golesh was hired in late November as Hugh Freeze’s replacement as the head coach for the Tigers. The Tigers have seen some significant departures, including leading receiver Cam Coleman, 5-star quarterback Deuce Knight, wide receivers Malcolm Simmons and Horatio Fields and several key defensive players such as Kayin Lee, Jay Crawford, Robert Woodyard Jr. and Malik Blocton.
With the transfer portal opening on Friday, Golesh has signed one player, quarterback Locklan Hewlett, who joins the Tigers after playing for Golesh at USF last season.
