Auburn Tigers head football coach Hugh Freeze struck gold when he put together the "Freeze Four": in-state blue-chip wide receivers Cam Coleman, Perry Thompson, Malcolm Simmons, and Bryce Cain.
The quartet has proved to be a major success for Freeze in 2024 by winning some much-needed games in a 5-7 season. The 2025 season comes with major expectations for them to work their magic and give Freeze a winning season, and hopefully save his job.
The WRs addressed the cameras on Thursday, opening up on how working out together and going bowling have helped them maintain an almost palpable chemistry.
"We hit the JUGS (machine) a lot, go bowling sometimes, and spend good quality time with each other, just building good chemistry," Thompson said, per the Auburn Observer.
"Our bond, it’s really nice. We all are from different spots. As soon as we all got up here and linked with each other, it felt like we all had known each other for years. … Everybody's pushing each other to be their greatest," Thompson continued.
“It’s a surreal feeling. With all us in-state receivers, before we all committed, we used to talk to each other every day. Just us off the field, just becoming better teammates — knowing what each other do and telling each other what not to do," Simmons added.
The chemistry they share is one of the main reasons why the group is considered the best freshman receiver class yet in Auburn's program history, and also why they contributed to a substantial portion of the Tigers' 2024 passing game.
Their real test would be this season, however. The receivers will have to sync well with QB Jackson Arnold, who is still smoothing out some of his rough edges. After the performance they had last season and the pressure Auburn has to have a winning season, the least expectations from the group would be to have more production than the previous season.
AU faces Baylor on Aug. 29 in the season opener.
