In today's edition of Auburn Tigers News, Johni Broome is the Sporting News Player of the Year, and Auburn baseball beat UT-Martin

On Wednesday, Auburn basketball star Johni Broome was named the Sporting News College Basketball Player of the Year. It is the first of the five major player of the year awards to be announced, and Broome is the first player in Auburn basketball history to win one of the honors.

The other major awards include the Associated Press and the Naismith Award, the Oscar Robertson Trophy, the Wooden Award and the NABC Player of the Year.

Broome is averaging 18.6 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists heading into the postseason, and he was just named the SEC Player of the Year earlier this week. The Tigers will play as the No. 1 overall seed in the SEC Tournament this weekend and will hope to land the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament later this month.

Auburn baseball beat UT-Martin

On Tuesday night, the Auburn baseball team took down UT-Martin 6-1 at Toyota Field in Huntsville, Alabama. Sophomore pitcher Alex Petrovic was the star for the Tigers, allowing only one run on one hit in 5.1 innings.

“That’s a confidence builder and a step for him,” head coach Butch Thompson said, per Auburn Rivals. “What I like about him is the maturity. It seems like it just set everybody. This is a team sport and he just settled everybody around him.”

Eric Snow led the Tigers on offense with three runs scored and three runs batted in. He knocked down a two-run homerun, and Cooper McMurray, Bub Terrell and Eric Guevara all contributed two hits each.

Auburn baseball advances to 14-3 as they head into SEC play. They will host Vanderbilt on the Plains for a three-game series this weekend.
