Cam Coleman has often been credited with being the kind of game-changing talent who can change the narrative on receivers on the Plains. While the "Freeze Four" in-state recruiting quartet of Coleman, Malcolm Simmons, Perry Thompson, and Bryce Cain is often lumped together, Coleman's potential typically gets its own shoutout.
Auburn Tigers On SI's Dre Gaines believes Coleman is the standout of Hugh Freeze's receiving corps, but he went further in his praise.
Gaines believes Coleman has the talent to break the team's long-standing single-season receiving record, owned by Terry Beasley from the 1970 season. Beasley had 1,194 yards that year, including 143 yards (and a touchdown) against the Ole Miss Rebels in the 1971 Gator Bowl.
While Gaines sees Eric Singleton Jr. as the player most scouts will be talking about for the 2026 NFL draft, Coleman is the one viewed as the can't-miss prospect the moment he's eligible for the big leagues.
"Who leads the team in receiving on such a deep unit? While Singleton is getting first-round talk from NFL Draft experts for 2026, teams will be salivating to draft Cam Coleman come 2027," Gaines wrote.
"Yes, it’s a deep room, but Coleman is something special. The Tigers have only had two 1,000-plus yard receivers in their history: Terry Beasley and Ronney Daniels.
"Expect Coleman to smash those records in 2025 and not only lead the Tigers in receiving this year, but also become Auburn’s single-season leader."
Unfortunately, while Coleman has the talent to be the next receiving great a la Beasley, he lacks a Pat Sullivan-type figure to get him there. Jackson Arnold could prove to be the answer under center, but Tiger fans will be seeing their signal-caller and deep running back room set up the pass. There's almost no chance we see anything remotely resembling an air raid this fall.
Coleman breaking receiving records is possible based on his abilities alone. It takes two to tango, though, and that requires a great deal of cooperation from the Oklahoma Sooners transfer quarterback.
