The Auburn Tigers defense was able to slow down "the hottest quarterback in the country right now" enough to pick up a 38-24 win in Week 1, from Waco, Texas.

Baylor Bears On SI's Luke Hubbard called Robertson such while lauding the 22-year-old for a monstrous performance (440 passing yards, four touchdown passes) in a 48-45 double overtime win over the SMU Mustangs in Dallas.

"I know we talked extensively about Sawyer Robertson earlier, but it's so easy to understate just how good he is. He was throwing the ball all over the field, and when it mattered the most, he drove Baylor down the field twice in the final five minutes to erase a 14-point deficit and send the game to overtime. In OT, Robertson threw a dot to Josh Cameron on second down, which helped set up a pass interference on the next play and led to a short rushing touchdown for Washington," Hubbard wrote.

"Robertson ended the game going 34-for-50 for 440 yards and four touchdowns without turning the ball over a single time. He's now up to 858 yards and seven touchdowns in just two games this season. He's the hottest quarterback in the country right now, and it's not particularly close."

The Tigers defense didn't stop Robertson by any stretch. The former Mike Leach Mississippi State Bulldogs recruit was dominant, racking up 419 yards through the air and three touchdown passes against DJ Durkin's defense.

Still, a major test was passed with flying colors. Baylor was down two touchdowns entering the fourth quarter and couldn't control the clock as Auburn's defense forced Bears offensive coordinator Jake Spavital to dig deep into his bag of tricks with one score in two nine-play drives.

That bodes well for AU's future. While they won't face a true test again until Week 4 against the Oklahoma Sooners, there's a foundation built on a successful first go at it on the road against a dark horse Big 12 contender.

Baylor's spectacular win over SMU on Saturday only makes Auburn's from eight days ago look even better.
