Deion Sanders named a potential coaching option for a 'desperate SEC program'

The Denver Gazette's Tyler King sees a specific scenario that could land Deion Sanders in the SEC next year.

Deion Sanders and the SEC were nearly bedfellows in 2019, when the Arkansas Razorbacks almost became the first Division I program to give him the platform to be "Coach Prime." Arkansas interviewed Sanders twice, but ultimately hired Sam Pittman instead. Sanders ended up with the SWAC's Jackson State Tigers, where he coached his two sons, quarterback Shedeur and safety Shilo, and the 2022 high school class's No. 1 recruit and the 2024 Heisman winner, Travis Hunter, before bringing them all with him to the Big 12 ahead of the 2023 season.

Other than the Hogs, there hasn't been a credible rumor linking Coach Prime to the "It Just Means More" conference. Sanders denied there was any interest from the Auburn Tigers during the 2022 coaching cycle in an on-the-record conversation I had with him recently. Auburn didn't call, email, or reach out in any capacity. Sanders sounded uninterested in divulging any further details. However, he did confirm that there was significant interest from the USF Bulls, who ended up hiring current Tigers head coach Alex Golesh days after the Colorado Buffaloes hired Sanders. From the sounds of it, USF was very close to hiring Sanders before Colorado beat them to the punch with more resources and the natural beauty of the Rockies.

The Denver Gazette's Tyler King shared a very interesting take on a potential SEC career switch during the next coaching cycle for Coach Prime in a recent feature story about his future. The sentiment King shared was that Sanders is probably staying at CU until the wheels fall off. Still, there was a scenario he saw that could land Coach Prime in SEC country.

"Barring another poor season below expectations that makes Sanders’ position untenable or a really successful, double-digit win season that sees a desperate SEC program pay what it takes to hire Coach Prime away, it’s hard to see 2026 as being his last in Boulder," King wrote.

Which SEC team could be 'desperate' and throw the bag at Deion Sanders?

There's one obvious SEC program that's a bad season away from a firing, as far as anyone could tell right now. If the South Carolina Gamecocks don't get a winning 2026 season with LaNorris Sellers back under center, Shane Beamer could be a goner. If that happens, Sanders could make sense as a replacement, considering Shilo started his collegiate career in Columbia. Maybe Shilo could even join him as a coach. Coach Prime's oldest son, Bucky, is heavily involved at Colorado, so there's a precedent there.

Another school that could get aggressive and bail on their current situation is the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Coach Prime spent the first three years of his collegiate coaching career in the Magnolia State, and if the needle doesn't move enough for Jeff Lebby in year three, perhaps State could consider a drastic coaching change to inspire the donor base.

Sanders has mostly been linked to the NFL in coaching switch rumors, mainly the Dallas Cowboys, but a jump from the Buffs has never been close. He has said he enjoys coaching college kids and doesn't want to deal with NFL egos.

If he stays in the college game but ever leaves Colorado, the SEC has multiple landing spots that could make sense. We'll see if any SEC program gives him the kind of leeway he gets at the University of Colorado Boulder. That may be the deal-breaker that keeps Coach Prime in the Centennial State for the rest of his coaching career.
