Deion Sanders said to have stolen 'top' transfer from Auburn football in the portal

Deion Sanders was said to have recruited one of Auburn head football coach Hugh Freeze and defensive coordinator DJ Durkin's top defensive backs from the transfer portal in Terrance Love.

Charlie Strella of the USA Today Network called Love "the" top safety in the portal while reporting on the ex-Tiger's Colorado commitment.

"Deion Sanders said on Saturday that he wanted to add a safety during the spring transfer portal period, and he nabbed the top one in the portal that Sunday morning," Strella wrote.

"Former Auburn safety Terrance Love, who visited Colorado for Saturday's spring game, announced his commitment to the Buffaloes."

That may be confusing to some in the Auburn family. Love has not been a top DB on the Plains during his two years, having lost Zac Etheridge after the 2023 season. Etheridge was hired by Houston and has since bolted UH for Miami.

On3's Barkley Truax outlined the narrative on Love and why he's given such stellar reviews despite not being much of a product for Durkin and Ron Roberts before him.

"Love played in 22 games for the Tigers over the past two seasons. He compiled eight tackles and a passbreakup on defense," Truax wrote.

"While those numbers and that level of production might not jump off the page, Love’s high school film will likely entice at least a few lookers in the transfer portal. He was a high-caliber recruit two years ago."

Love is certainly learning from one of the greatest DBs to do it in "Neon Deion." Boulder has ex-NFLers everywhere. There are professional connections up and down the staff directory.

Love leaves Auburn to join a coach who many Tiger fans, including prominent beat writers, still think should've been considered when John Cohen faced his major hiring as AU's AD -- or should be considered to replace Freeze right now.
