A former 4-star recruit has found his next stop in the world of college basketball. Last month, former Syracuse guard Chance Westry elected to enter the transfer portal after two quiet seasons in New York. According to Matt Zenitz, he has signed with UAB and will return to the state of Alabama.
From Chandler, Arizona, Westry was a 4-star recruit out of high school and was ranked as the No. 12 SF in the recruiting class of 2022. He was the No. 3 player out of Arizona, and he signed with Auburn basketball as a freshman.
Though he had a lot of hype heading into his collegiate career, he suffered a preseason knee injury and was only able to participate in 11 of the Tigers' contests in the 2022-23 season. After a disappointing year on the Plains, Westry elected to enter the transfer portal for the first time and landed at Syracuse.
He missed the entire 2023-24 season due to an injury on the knee opposite from the one he injured as a freshman at Auburn. He spent the offseason working with the team, but suffered from an undisclosed illness during the preseason. He missed the first six games, played a total of 10 minutes spread among the next three games, and then didn't play again for the rest of the season. He did not travel with the team and was listed as "unavailable due to medical reasons."
Now, Westry will try to return to the game at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
