After just over two years away from the game, former Auburn football head coach Bryan Harsin has finally found another job. Reports indicate that Cal, a team who beat Auburn on their own turf earlier this season, is set to hire Harsin to be their offensive coordinator, per ESPN's Chris Low.
“Former Boise State and Auburn coach Bryan Harsin is set to become Cal’s OC, sources tell (Adam Rittenberg) and me,” Low posted on Twitter.“Harsin and Cal coach previously worked together as coordinators on Chris Petersen’s staff at Boise State.”
Cal announced earlier this season it was looking to make a change at the offensive coordinator position. Harsin emerged as a strong candidate earlier this week to replace Mike Bloesch, who has coached Cal's offense for the past two seasons. The job will reunite him with Justin Wilcox, Cal's head coach who previously worked as the defensive coordinator for Boise State while Harsin was the offensive coordinator from 2006 to 2009.
Harsin spent time as Boise State's head coach, putting together a 69-19 record with the Broncos, before taking over after Gus Malzahn on the Plains in 2020. He was fired in 2022 after a tumultuous tenure that involved all sorts of malicious allegations and rumors. He struggled to recruit at a high level and could not put things together on the field or interact well with the Auburn family.
In the years since parting ways with Auburn football, Harsin has maintained a public presence on X (formerly Twitter) and often takes jabs at the Tigers through his posts on the social media site. Most recently, he posted a photo of himself in an Alabama "LANK" shirt with the caption "Cheers to the winners!" following the 2024 Iron Bowl.
It's become clear that Harsin has a great disdain for Auburn football, so it's poetic that he would take a job with a team that beat the Tigers earlier this season. Maybe now he will spend more time coaching and less time tweeting.
