For some reason, around 2 P.M. CT, former Auburn Tigers receiver Anthony Schwartz tweeted that the Iron Bowl got "a whole lot bigger," when the Alabama Crimson Tide take to Jordan-Hare Stadium for their regular season finale. For AU, it could be the end of the 2025 season altogether if they lose.
Schwartz had previously tweeted that the "Iron bowl actually matters so not paying attention to the agent games," but amended that by saying that he had lied and that "this game just got a whole lot bigger."
No clarity was provided on whether he meant the Egg Bowl, which had been going on still but was out of reach for the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a 38-19 loss to the Ole Miss Rebels, the latter of which is in the center of the College Football world because of Lane Kiffin's ongoing coaching sweepstakes, or the Iron Bowl.
Between noon and 1 P.M. CT was when news broke of the Florida Gators being the favorite to land the Tulane Green Wave's Jon Sumrall. Not long after, it was found out that Urban Meyer was involved in the pitch to poach Sumrall from the Big Easy and keep him away from the Plains.
Auburn can end any question of who deserves the job with Iron Bowl win
Hugh Freeze was hired to beat the Alabama Crimson Tide. He almost did it in 2023, but lost in heartbreaking fashion on the infamous 4th and 31 touchdown pass from Jalen Milroe to Isaiah Bond on the "Gravedigger" play in Nick Saban's final season. Freeze drifted from that goal with a 28-14 loss to the Tide in Tuscaloosa last year.
If interim head coach DJ Durkin beats Kalen DeBoer and Co. in Week 14, why not promote him to full-time head coach?
If retaining Durkin moves the needle in retaining the young defensive pieces that helped give the Tigers a top unit in the SEC, it becomes even easier to justify that decision.
If Kiffin and Sumrall are out of reach, perhaps reaching at all any longer isn't the most prudent move.
