Out of Foley, Ala., Thompson was one of the prized recruits in Hugh Freeze's first full class as the head coach of the Tigers, but he never was able to prove that he could be counted on consistently. In two seasons, Thompson recorded 22 receptions for 280 yards and a touchdown, that coming in the first game of his college career against Alabama A&M.
Missed opportunities for Perry Thompson
In 2025, as Auburn's offense struggled, Thompson caught 17 passes for 154 yards.
Thompson was part of the class that brought Cam Coleman, Malcolm Simmons and Bryce Cain to the Plains. He becomes the third player to enter the portal since Alex Golesh was hired as Auburn's new head coach, joining Antonio Coleman and Raion Strader.
From his 247Sports scouting report as a recruit:
"Estimated at 6-foot-3 and 200-pounds plus. Possesses a strong frame with growth potential to add additional weight to build. Three phase player that displays good athleticism in each phase of the game.
"Physical prospect on the offensive side of the ball that understands how to utilize his frame and play strength as a pass catcher and as a runner in the open field. Flashes excellent leaping ability with the ability to adjust within a wide catch radius. Plays more vertical than in-breaking as a route runner while showing the ability to get linear down field. Appears to exhibit good run after catch production, displaying the ability to consistently play through contact as a route runner and with the ball in his hands.
"Has a physical nature to him at the receiver position that is apparent when evaluating him on the defensive side of the ball and special teams. Will need to continue to improve as a pass catcher as he can sometimes let the ball get into his body and fight it at the catch point."
