After his first two seasons on the Plains, 2025 could be a make-or-break year for Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze. So far, despite improving the recruiting classes and the coaching staff, Freeze has produced two losing seasons for the Tigers, and patience is running thin.
This year, the Tigers are headed into the fall with a completely new quarterback room. Only Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold and freshman QB Deuce Knight took reps with the team in spring practice, with Stanford transfer Ashton Daniels joining up with the group later in the summer.
In addition to the quarterback room changes, the Tigers are also fully loaded at the wide receiver position with transfers Eric Singleton Jr. and Horatio Fields joining the Freeze Four. The stage is set for a successful year on the Plains, but is 2025 the year where Freeze and his team collect more than six wins? According to former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy, it is.
“I love it. I thought last year they were going to have a winning season, so I’ve been burned before,” McElroy said of the Auburn football team, per On3. “But I look at where they’ve immediately upgraded their roster. A starting quarterback (Jackson Arnold). I thought Payton Thorne was a little underrated last year, but at the end of the day, too many mistakes from a few too many chances with the football. A couple of those interceptions led to losses.
“If they can get hot early and beat Baylor in the non conference and carry over some of that momentum in the regular season, we’ve been looking at an Auburn team that’s 4-1, 5-0 before Georgia comes to town.
“So yes, I think, Auburn absolutely will have a winning season this year. I’d be surprised if it’s not eight or nine wins.”
Auburn football will return to action on Friday, August 29, against the Baylor Bears on the road in Waco, Texas.
