Former Auburn fan favorite already turning heads in Austin makes things worse for Tigers fans

Hugh Freeze never got the most out of Cam Coleman, and early indications out of Texas indicate that Steve Sarkisian won't have that same problem.

It was always going to hurt for Auburn fans when former five-star wide receiver Cam Coleman first took the field in burnt orange for the Texas Longhorns. However, few could have expected that pain to begin this early into Coleman’s tenure in Austin.

Unsurprisingly, the reports out of Austin are that Coleman has been “killing it” in winter workouts and that his speed has really stood out for sources within the program, according to Anwar Richardson.

Auburn fans are intimately familiar with Coleman’s talent and also painfully aware of how underutilized he was with the Tigers through Hugh Freeze’s struggles to find a reliable quarterback. Yet, somehow, it seems that Coleman could be heading towards an even bigger year with Arch Manning and the Longhorns than anybody could have predicted.

Cam Coleman is already receiving rave reviews from sources within the Texas program

The interesting part of that quote from Richard’s reporting is the “He adds a speed dimension to the receiver room that we didn’t have last year” part.

Last season, Texas’s No. 1 wide receiver was fellow 2024 five-star Ryan Wingo, whose best attribute is his straight-line speed. Wingo is not exactly a complete wide receiver. He lacks the elite body control to consistently win at the catch point, and drops have been a problem throughout his two years at Texas. He’s just not a natural pass catcher. But he isn’t lacking for straight-line speed.

Still, this source from Texas thinks Coleman adds a new element of verticality to the offense. That should be terrifying for the rest of the SEC. Coleman is a true X receiver, capable of running every route in the route tree, but if he’s going to dominate downfield on go-routes and posts to be the big play threat, that shifts Wingo into more of a gadget role where Steve Sarkisian can utilitze his speed on jet sweeps, screens, and underneath routes where he can rack up yards after the catch.

Texas is all-in on this year’s roster. It’s likely Manning’s final year in college before becoming the No. 1 pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, and Texas approached the transfer portal with that level of urgency, not just adding Coleman but bringing in NC State running back Hollywood Smothers, Wake Forest offensive tackle Melvin Siani, Pitt linebacker Rasheem Biles, and multiple other high-level players. Still, Coleman was the headliner, and it sounds like he could be the biggest star in Austin next season.
