US Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) wants to curb movement in College Football's transfer portal, and he's proposing a bill, the "Student Athlete Act of 2026," that would formalize the restrictions into law.

Tuberville lashed out against players who are using the system to make more money than they otherwise would by threatening movement, and wants to put power back in the billion-dollar institutions' hands.

"Sixty to seventy percent of them (college programs) don't even look at high school athletes, they look at the portal and say 'How can we win now? How can we bring players in?'. It's going to bring the price down on a lot of these players in which to me, it's ok because they're going to be making money anyway. I'm all for them making money," Tuberville told OutKick on Tuesday. "But for them to keep selling themselves for $50,000 to $100,000 more, I think it's creating a huge problem.

"That's got to be handled by the NCAA. But one thing we can do is stop this transfer every year, and give these kids the chance to get a degree, and one time transfer if they have a death in the family, circumstances or don't get along with the coaches. But, if you use it, it's over with. But if you use it, you have to sit out a year, though most of them won't do that anyway."

Auburn has been burned by the transfer portal more often than not

Truthfully, the transfer portal has been destructive for Auburn. If the Big Ten hadn't won the past several titles and the SEC had instead, Tuberville might not be trying as hard to curtail player movement. He was never a fan, but he and Nick Saban are some of Donald Trump's most trusted confidants on the issue. Both have been staunchly against the current system.

It's maybe nothing, but the Tigers have been burned by the portal more often than not. Jackson Arnold just came and left after a year, not that many wanted him back, and Ashton Daniels did the same. Eric Singleton Jr. was the most impactful player to be a one-and-done on the Plains last season. Since 2021, the list of one-and-done transfers from AU has been long.

Again, not saying this affects Tuberville's thinking. We just don't have any evidence that it's not affecting it.
