The Georgia Bulldogs could be in serious trouble without their starting center, Drew Bobo, in the College Football Playoff.
While ESPN’s Mark Schlabach didn't sound overly worried about the Dawgs' offensive line against the Ole Miss Rebels' defensive front in the Sugar Bowl, he did sound worried about potential matchups with the Miami Hurricanes in the CFP semifinals and the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the title game.
As Schlabach noted, Drew is the son of UGA offensive coordinator and Kirby Smart's right-hand man and long-time assistant, Mike Bobo.
“Georgia’s offensive line struggled early but improved throughout the season once key players returned from injury,” Schlabach wrote. “Then the Bulldogs lost starting center Drew Bobo to a foot injury in their 16-9 victory against Georgia Tech in the regular-season finale. Bobo, whose father is Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, will miss the CFP because of the injury.
“Georgia’s offensive line ended up being among the better ones in the SEC. The team ranked third in the league in sacks allowed (18) and fifth in rushing (186.6 yards) after struggling mightily to run the ball in 2024. How well will the line hold up if the Bulldogs end up playing a menacing defensive front such as Miami’s or Texas Tech’s?”
Smart said that he's "optimistic we get all those guys back ... get them back recovered, get them going."
Sounds like coach-speak to not announce something that could have a ripple effect with the fanbase.
Drew Bobo's father Mike was Auburn's OC in 2021
Mike Bobo infamously served as Bryan Harsin's play-caller during the 2021 season in what was a decision sold as his, but knowing how things turned out between the Boise native and the Tigers' brain trust, it might not have been.
Bobo is known for his fourth-down play-call to throw a fade at the two-yard line against the Penn State Nittany Lions during a 28-20 loss for AU in Happy Valley. He was fired following the 2021 Iron Bowl loss.
