Hugh Freeze called it, and now it's turning out exactly the way he predicted.
At the beginning of the 2025 season, Freeze stated with calm confidence that Jeremiah Cobb would have a breakout year. Fast forward to three weeks into the season, and the prediction is turning out precisely the way Freeze imagined it.
Cobb proved to be Auburn's offensive cornerstone in leading them to a 31-15 victory over South Alabama on Saturday. The standout RB finished his night with 119 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.
"It's big. My prediction back in the summer and spring meetings -- that he would have a breakout year -- I think it's coming true," Freeze said in his post-game conference, beaming with pride.
"That's two consecutive 100-yard games. I thought they were tough runs, a lot of them. No. 1, he took care of the ball very, very well. That's something we've worked on with him a lot. Coach Nix and Coach Spurlock, give them a lot of credit for that. It's good to see him have that success. It's much needed." Freeze added.
Jackson Arnold was equally impressed with Cobb's skills as he doubled down on Freeze's praise for the Montgomery native. But Arnold took the credentials a step forward and lauded the entire running back room for bringing their A-game.
"It's awesome," the quarterback said. "I trust Jeremiah, and that goes for every one of our backs. I thought Omar played a great game, was very physical. Same thing with DA. A guy like Cobb, who I know can run, he gets a dirty 5 yards. It gives me peace of mind knowing our RPO game, if there's any indecision at all, if I hand that ball off, I know we're going to get 4 or 5 yards."
An unforgiving SEC slate still awaits the Auburn Tigers, which will most likely be their toughest tests this season.
If Cobb manages to hold up against them equally well, then he will undoubtedly have a breakout year.
