For many years, Jordan-Hare Stadium has had the past in one end zone and the future in the other. In the north end zone was the analog scoreboard, which has been in place since 1987. In the south end zone was the massive jumbotron that was installed in 2015 and is one of the largest video boards in all of college sports.
Now, the scoreboard from the 80s is no more. Since July, construction crews have been working on the first of many proposed upgrades to Auburn football's north end zone, which begins with a brand new video board. It will stand 47 feet high by 154 feet wide, slightly smaller than the south video board which stands at 57 feet tall by 190 feet wide.
But the video board is just the first project in the renovations of the Tigers' north end zone, which is ultimately set to include additional concourse space and more premium opportunities for fans in a multi-use facility. Upon completion, the video board will sit on a concrete structure until the next phases of the project begin.
For now, Athletic Director John Cohen and his team are working on finalizing an architect for the project, setting the budget, and taking care of all the details that must be addressed before further construction can begin. He emphasized the importance of the project to the fans and the athletic department.
“Everything's still on the table,” Cohen said, per the Montgomery Advertiser. “There are budgeting matters that have to be dealt with. You have to create pro formas that allow you to compare what this is going to cost to how much revenue is going to be brought in. It's a process.
“I like where we are with the north end zone project. I think it is coming along. We devote a lot of attention to that, because it's important to the future not only of our football program, but it's important to the future of our athletic department. It's a potential revenue stream.”
